Living on a tropical island, more frequently than normal, there is the chance of a coconut falling off a palm tree and smacking you on the head. Not a great feeling I imagine, and apparently the most common reason why the tourists end up in the medical center. That was probably the first thing I learnt about the otherwise peaceful coconuts in Koh Tao, but later on I found out where their actual power is.
Seeing a person sucking on a coconut juice from the actual coconut through a straw is a very common thing to see on the island. Of course, I couldn’t be the exception, so I went straight to the bar and asked for a young fresh coconut. You wonder how it was? Well, young and fresh and coconuty 🙂
The taste of the water is very mild and pleasant, especially when served cold, but most importantly, it has some amazing health benefits! It’s not only tasty and refreshing, but it’s also very low on calories (only 19 per 100ml), very rich in Vitamin B-complex and potassium, helps with digestion, improves metabolism, aids for weight loss, improves the overall skin condition (especially for oily and acne-prone skins), and contains calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, sodium and Vitamin C. Shall I continue? Ok, you asked for it. It also helps to reduce high blood pressure, it’s a great hangover remedy (just don’t ask me how I know that :)), it has anti-aging and anti-carcinogenic effect, and it’s amazingly refreshing in the hot summer days.
I think you got the point now – it’s a fantastic gift from nature and if you’ve got the chance, go get one and enjoy the great taste and amazing health benefits (I’ve seen it in some European supermarkets, so you don’t really need to be on a tropical island to get one). Once you’re done with the water, you can also munch on the tasty meaty inner part. Yum!
Tip: It’s better served cold 😉
You can’t possibly expect that the coconut water will have so many amazing benefits, and the coconut oil wouldn’t. At least I didn’t. So I went into the nearby shop and there it was – a wide selection of different brands of coconut oil. My choice went with the local one, hand pressed by a Thai grandma (or at least I was told so), organic, unrefined.
The first impression was of a wonderful scent and soft texture, but what really impressed me was its multi-purpose usage! Surprisingly, you can use it as a natural sun blocker, after sun moisturizer, hair conditioner, remedy and cooking! Even after the first application, my hair got more shine, my skin felt softer than ever, and for my juicier friends out there – it also helps against friction and inner thighs chafing in the hot summer days ;).
To go even further, coconut oil has amazing anti fungal properties and can cure yeast infections, including vaginal yeast infections. I was so impressed by it that I wrote a separate post, that you can read here.
My personal opinion is that it also serves as a natural mosquito repellent as the mozzies didn’t even touch me.
Currently a single bottle of coconut oil replaces my sunscreen, moisturizer, mosquito repellent, hair mask and some medications. Not bad 🙂
When it comes to nutrition, coconut oil is considered to be among the healthiest foods on the planet. It helps in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, prevents high blood pressure, helps with weight loss (and especially belly fat), cures kidney infection, boosts the immune system, helps with type II diabetes, balances hormones, and so on, and so forth.
This little miracle hasn’t left my side since I discovered it and the good news is that you don’t have to live on a tropical island in order to get some. If you don’t have it in your local health foods shop, you can find an extra virgin organic cold-pressed coconut oil on Amazon.
In case you’re not a fan of cows’, or any other animal’s milk, coconut milk is the thing for you.
It combines all the benefits of the coconut water and oil, and you can add it to your tasty shake – lactose free! Shall I also add that it helps build muscle tissue and trims the fat? It’s proven to improve digestion and heart health, manages blood sugar and prevents fatigue. The list can go on and on, but the conclusion is one – coconut is awesome!
Coconut Ice Cream
You don’t believe that ice cream can actually be good for you? Well here’s the good news – it can! As a proper foodie I like to have a nice desert every now and then, especially if guilt-free options are available. It turns out that if we have the ice cream prepared with natural coconut milk (no canned stuff), it holds a lot of the benefits that the coconut has for us. And it’s delicious too!
Mama nature was kind enough to give us this amazing super food, which can prevent disease, heal, improve health, skin and hair condition, and it tastes so good. All we need to do is give it a try and reap the benefits. Being healthy from the inside and glowing from the outside will undoubtedly improve the way we feel about ourselves, which in turn will lead to a generally happier life.
Viva el coco!
