Why Travelling On Your Period Shouldn’t Be A Worry Anymore

Travel kit and OrganiCup menstrual cup

Imagine you’ve just planned a beautiful trip off to somewhere, you’re super happy and excited, but then you check your moon calendar and you get a cold shower – it will be period time! Sounds familiar?

Instead of fully enjoying your holiday now you have to also worry about things like – shall I stock enough tampons for countries where they’re hard to find (Indonesia comes to mind right away), am I going to find appropriate places to change before it’s too late, is my tampon string going to embarrass me somewhere?

That was me for many years, but not anymore. Now I can do everything I want without any of those worries because I found OrganiCup!

What The Heck Is OrganiCup?

OrganiCup is a menstrual cup, which is the easy, healthy, and green alternative to pads and tampons. Maybe you’ve heard about it, maybe you haven’t, or maybe you even use one already (good for you!).

Check out my video review below to get a better idea:

Let me put it all in black and white 🙂 OrganiCup is a multi-use cup made of medical-grade silicone that you can use for ALL your periods for the next 10 years! You just insert it in the morning, enjoy the next 12 hours, remove, empty in the toilet, rinse and put it back in for another 12 hours. If you can’t rinse it you can just use a wet wipe or the special OrganiWipes that the company offers. It will take very little space in your purse or travel kit, and it will give you worry-free days and nights!

I really got SO in love with the cup, that I wanted to spread the word to more and more women out there. From OrganiCup they were so amazing as to offer me a special code travelbirdie, which will give all my readers and friends free shipping! If you enter the code when ordering from their website you’ll get rid of the shipping cost and I’ll get a small commission. Now that I think about it, I would have recommended them even without a commission, so it’s a win-win-win 🙂

It’s small, soft and easy to carry around

At the end of your period you just boil it in water for a few minutes to sterilize it and put it away until your next period. It’s that simple.

Eew, That Sounds Gross

Your initial reaction might be that this is a bit gross, and so was mine. When a friend of mine first told be about it I was very skeptical and slightly disgusted by the idea, but I gave it a second thought and decided to try it. After all, my friend is a mid-wife, a yoga instructor and a keen traveller, so she must know this and that about periods, vaginas and healthy lifestyle. 🙂
The cup is soft and secured by a light vacuum, so you won’t feel a thing. Once inserted properly there is no risk of leaking and nothing goes in or out. This means that no activity is a taboo during your heaviest days anymore. Yep, swimming and scuba diving too, and guess what else? It’s not that gross at all!

OrganiCup  is cleaner and healthier

OrganiCup is hypoallergenic, vegan and made of 100% medical-grade silicone, which means it won’t mess with your vagina’s natural flora and pH levels (won’t give you a toxic shock syndrome either). Combined with the fact you can use it for 10 years, it’s the biggest contribution you can make for the planet and your wallet.

OrganiCup menstrual cup sizes
Two sizes to choose from

The cup has 2 sizes – one for women who have given birth (or with heavier flow) and for women  who haven’t. To get one, all you need to do is go to their website here, chose your cup and enter travelbiride code to your basket before checkout.

Why Choose OrganiCup?

There are several brands for menstrual cups on the market that you can choose from. You might feel more attracted to another brand, but whichever you choose, trust me, it will change your life!

For me OrganiCup won strongly for a few reasons:

  • They’re 100% organic. Even the package is made from recycled paper and is also serves as a user guide. This is important for me as I want to live green and preserve Mama Nature. I’ve seen way too many nasties on the ocean floor while scuba diving.
  • Easy to choose the guidelines for which size you need are pretty clear and straightforward. They have a pretty cool website explaining why and how to use it as well.

  • Fantastic Support – if you have any questions before you purchase your cup, you’ll receive an amazing support and detailed information from someone who actually read your email. Bad customer service can really put me off.
  • Satisfaction Guarantee – they’re so awesome that they also offer a refund in case you’re not happy with the cup after 90 days (use it for 3 cycles). Even if you order the wrong size for you, they’ll send you another one. In any case, you don’t lose a thing.

Another reason for you to chose it is that now you can get it with a free shipping if you use my code travelbirdie. 🙂

Getting Used To Your Cup

As with everything unfamiliar, you’d probably need some time to get used to your cup. It took me a few days to get the hang of removing it easily, especially in the morning (inserting didn’t seem to be a problem). When I shared this with one of my friends, she said it took her 2 months to learn how to take her contacts out, so a few days of getting used to the cup is nothing.

It’s possible that while you sleep the cup gets a bit further in and a bit harder to remove. If this happens, don’t panic and just continue with your morning routine. I do yoga, prepare breakfast/coffee and try again after that. Usually it works like a charm.

OrganiCup certifications
I love their certifications

I’ve read that some women cut the cup’s stem (tail, or whatever you want to call it) shorter, because they could feel it. Except for the first use ever, I’ve never felt it and I don’t know how I’m gonna take it out without it, so I wouldn’t recommend cutting it. Of course, it’s a matter of personal preference once you get used to the cup.

Soon I’ll post a video with my 10 cents on how to use OrganiCup properly and how I dealt with different situations. If you have any questions in the meantime, just drop me a line.

Happy travels ladies! It’s a #NewPeriod!

    1. Thanks Stella! I didn’t think I could either, but it’s much easier than expected! OrganiCup offers a money back guarantee if you’re not happy with the cup after 90 days, so you can still give it a try and not lose anything in the end 🙂

  2. Love this post! I’ve always been dubious about menstrual cups but I know I should take the plunge and try it sometime.

  3. After reading this post I might consider using this as the conventional methods are sometimes inconvenient when travelling. This looks like an alternative worth trying out.

    1. Sure it is Ellie! Especially having in mind OrganiCup offers satisfaction guarantee as well! They are THAT confident that you wouldn’t return it. I know I wouldn’t 😀
